Experimenting...

Originally the "atrium" (which is now a basic oval) was designed as a random shape (Image below). But when trying to rotate at different angles (along x and y) it proved difficult and more importantly what was baked turned out too random as oppose to something that was designed with thought.

The structure was intended to represent a new sprout growing out of a fully developed forest, being shaped and influenced by the already existing roots of the buildings and the surrounding structures. Like all the characteristics of a new sprout the architecture possess a fragile yet firm exterior, new, fresh, lightweight, sustainable and most of all it represents the further development and hope in sustainable development. All these factors of the new structure was designed to compliment the surrounding structures, the main structure being the Sydney Tower and the new Pitt street mall. The proposed structure will sit in a way that allows the Sydney tower to maintain its name as the Centre point as well as possibly enhancing the splendour of it. The new structure will be constructed in a way not only to be aesthetic to the eye but in all aspects of functionality.

The main focus of this project is to revitalize this busy and traffic congested junction. It is to build an architecture that acts as in infill but will result in a more freeing and seemingly spacious environment that is in harmony with the natural environment and the constructed environment. The proposed idea is literally to plant a new seed in the midst of developed land to create a new hope and to symbolize the growth and furthering of sustainability.

Transparent Existence sounds like a contradiction but that is the concept design of this structure. Located on the Corner of Castlereagh and King Street in Sydney CBD, It is highly congested with traffic and sits at a prime location along with one of Sydney’s main attractions, the Centre point tower and Pit Street Mall. The design brief stated that the proposed building must fill the site, accommodate pedestrians, and be considerate of heavy traffic ; All this without over shadowing the Sydney tower but rather compliment the existing/natural surrounding structures. This structure was designed to present the Sydney Tower. The model is made completely out of clear acrylic and held in place with steel rods. A feature of this design is the functionality of it. The 'rear' end of the structure (although modelled with clear acrylics) is closed in office/commercial space. The main feature is the atrium, it is all transparent, created so that it would act as place where the city view (Sydney tower, pit street mall and other surroundings) could be admired and enjoyed. It was designed to be transparent in materiality but hold a steady presence. Created to enhance the city scope, not to drawn attention but give attention and in doing so establishing a modest yet charismatic existence.
